I elected to write a story about the Tacoma fireboat, a subject about which no one else in the fourth grade knew anything whatsoever. Even Mrs. Mills didn’t know anything about the Tacoma fireboat. But I, as the son of a tugboat captain and as a regular passenger aboard my father’s tug on Tacoma’s Commencement Bay from infancy, knew all about the Tacoma fireboat.
My story, which was only about three paragraphs long, was primarily a firsthand description of what it felt like to be in a nearby tugboat on the bay and ride the large waves that the Tacoma fireboat made when it went by at top speed. The story made a big hit with the other fourth graders because it described an experience that none of them had ever had themselves, nor had ever even heard about before.
